Inspiration and Communication

Are you a manager who gives a rah-rah speech to your employees, but it seems to fall on deaf ears? Or do you give orders and expect your employees to respond as directed? Yet, again, you don’t see the results you expect. This is likely because your style does not resonate with your employee; it doesn’t meet them where they are. It also may imply that you don’t have any credibility with your employees. The bottom line is they don’t respect who you are and are not inspired to meet your expectations and/or to perform at a high level.

As I have addressed in past several blogs, there are many factors that impact how well an employee performs and his/her desire to remain engaged and committed to your organization. Appreciation (ranked #1) and company culture (ranked #2) were the two highest-ranked factors. The next factor (ranked #3) that was deemed important to encourage employee engagement and retention was “Inspiration and Communication.” This involves the style you use to communicate with your employees and whether they have respect for you as a manager.

What should you do to ensure that your employees have respect for you? You start by making sure that you know yourself. Why does that matter?

“Self-awareness helps leaders understand what they bring to their role. Understanding their strengths in industry skills and knowledge as well as personal characteristics allows a leader to perform their responsibilities within an organization better.” Quote Source

There are several important aspects that you should portray to your team to enhance your credibility with your employees.

1)    Demonstrate integrity – always do what you say you are going to do.

2)    Don’t ask them to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself – know your own limitations.

-  There may be times when you can’t do it. In those cases, it is important to delegate it to someone who you know has the capacity to complete what you need them to do.

3)    “Meet them where they are” – know what their strengths are, so you can put them in situations in which they can be successful.

By being self-aware you will be able to communicate more effectively. This will go a long way in helping to ensure that your employees are inspired to be productive, perform, and remain committed to your organization. Speak to their strengths and you will be amazed by how well they respond.
