State of the Workplace Gallup 2021: Findings Part 2

Last week I shared a few findings from the State of the Global Workplace, Gallup 2021 report. I also gave you a challenge to evaluate your communication skills from a teamwork perspective. How did you do? What one thing did you do differently and how did your team respond? I really would like to know.

This week, I want to dig a little deeper into the findings that we talked about last week. Some of these numbers will be a repeat but all tie together to the bigger issue.

The bigger issue (in my mind) is that we try to create our life in little segmented boxes. Relationships go in one box. Business/work goes in another. Volunteering/church go in another, you get the idea. The box method does not really work in real life though.

All the boxes are mixed together because all of the boxes contain people, which means relationships happen all around us, in every box.

When we try to put things in a box like that we miss out on teamwork opportunities that could make everyone's life much better.

One of the findings listed below says that 32% of people consider themselves to be “thriving”. 32%, wow. If you were able to connect with someone on your team in such a way that allowed you to realize that they were one of the 68% of people that are NOT thriving, and then engaged with them to see what they could do to improve their quality of life… How do you think that would impact your team?

Knowing that 50% of people surveyed said that they have lost income due to COVID, how do you think it would affect your teamwork/culture if you were able to give your team a small bonus or even a thoughtful gesture of taking an afternoon off with pay?

Teamwork isn’t just about how you work together but how you can impact each other's lives. Worry, anger, stress, sadness are all on the rise. What if in your company people felt safe enough to reach out for help and deal with some of the emotions that they are feeling? How do you think your teamwork would improve?

This week I am going to challenge you to continue working on your communication skills AND ask that you consider doing one thing for someone on your team that you believe would affect them in a positive way. Do they need someone to vent to without feeling judged? Be that person for them. Do they need a long lunch on a patio? Treat them to their favorite spot. Ask them about their family and really listen to the answer.

Together we really are better. The stronger our teams are the better our lives will be, not just at work.
