The Great Discontent

Over the last few weeks, I have been sharing some findings from the 2021 Gallup State of the Global Workplace report. If you have missed any of those blogs you can find the links to them at the bottom of this blog.

Now more than ever, people are discontent with their work. Almost 50% of people are actively looking for a different job, a lot of the time even while at their current job.

The studies show this is not a:

  • Pay issue
  • Role issue
  • Industry issue

More people than ever quit their job in May of 2021.

If the discontentment is not a pay, role, or industry issue, what is?

While engagement isn’t really the problem, it's a result of the problem/issue. Based on the results of the studies I have looked at, engagement is one of the ways you can measure the problem.

This is a powerful quote from one of the articles I have reviewed, you can see the full article here.

The lost productivity of not engaged and actively disengaged employees is equal to 18% of their annual salary.

Gallup has a great article about employee engagement. They have identified 12 things that can help you with your employee engagement.

  1. What Is Employee Engagement?
  2. Why Is Employee Engagement Important?
  3. Drivers of Employee Engagement: What People Really Want and Need
  4. Why Current Programs Don't Improve Employee Engagement
  5. Gallup's Q12 Employee Engagement Survey Questions
  6. What Highly Engaged Employees Do Differently: The 3 Personas of Engagement
  7. Connecting Employee Engagement With Better Performance and Business Outcomes
  8. How to Improve Employee Engagement Now: Team-Building Ideas
  9. Connecting Employee Engagement and the Employee Experience
  10. The Manager's Role in Employee Engagement
  11. Create a Culture of High Development Through Engagement
  12. Gallup's Top Employee Engagement Services and Content

When you implement these ideas they believe that you will see your employee engagement go up, and I agree with them.

You probably won't be surprised to know that communication is a critical part of employee engagement. Helping your team understand their responsibilities fully and own their part of the process will pay off more than just about anything else.

Your homework this week is to pick one of the 12 areas that Gallup suggests and work on it to see if you can build more employee engagement. Then you can report back to me and let me know how it goes.
